Rebuilding for Resilience: Northern Rivers Schools

Bundjalung Country

Taylor Brammer Landscape Architects are playing a key role in the redesign of six schools in the Northern Rivers, which were severely impacted by the devastating floods of 2022. Our approach centres on integrating flood resilience into the surrounding landscapes, ensuring the outdoor spaces are adaptable, functional, and reflective of the local environment.

The new elevated classrooms at each site are designed with sheltered educational spaces, which provide versatile areas for outdoor learning, play, and storage while addressing flood requirements. The design of the external environments work in harmony with these spaces, creating environments that can withstand future flood risks.

Each school features a carefully curated environmental strategy, using indigenous species suited to the local ecosystems. These plantings not only support flood resilience but also offer educational opportunities for students, and are tailored to the environmental guidelines of each school’s location.

Additionally, our designs incorporate the 'Connecting with Country' framework, embedding stories of Country and cultural heritage. This approach ensures that the school grounds are not only functional and resilient but also deeply connected to the cultural and historical significance of the land.

We are committed to creating environments that are resilient, sustainable, and supportive of the communities they serve, fostering spaces that will thrive for generations to come.
